FLORIDA HERBAL CONFERENCE 2019
This year my family had the wonderful experience to visit for the first time the Florida Herbal Conference. For years, we had been hearing the wonderful time that many that have assisted in the past. This year, thanks to the generosity of their scholarship, we had the opportunity to go.
The first thing we noticed about it, was the beautiful setting, Camp La Llanada, situated in Central Florida, close to Lake Wales. They offered cabins and also camping space to plant lovers of all kinds.
In reality, I am a lover of plants, and we have our backyard garden in South Florida, where we grow a variety of native plants, and other edibles for our family consumption. But above all, we enjoy the mental benefits that come from tending to plants, the beauty they bring into our lives and the history we are making in our family by growing our garden together.
So having any opportunity to learn from well known, very knowledgeable teachers from around the world, is something we are very thankful to receive.
Many moments were so fantastic on our weekend there, and the experience can be very different for everyone, but I will like to list some moments, just to give you a glimpse on how this weekend was for our family:
Main Plaza
Yes, they had a plaza where the main stage was, where we started each day with a communal greeting, announcements and more. Everyday, there was a blessing and music! Everything was so uplifting! Also, in the same space, you can find different vendors and business that offer their herbs, herbal medicines, knowledge, products, books, plants and more!! We were able to get beautiful medicinal plants from our friends Three Amigos Growers, bought amazing herbal formulas from Beautyberry Apothecary and get some amazing books for our personal library.
Children and Youth Herbal Classes
I am always so thankful to find spaces where children and youth are welcome, and also have classes for them. My children were well taken care at the children area with persons that were knowledgeable on plants, they played, and they learned about plants and they explore the beautiful natural areas where the conference was. Also, our friends from Materia Musica shared their herbal songs with the children; every song explains the benefits for our health on different medicinal plants. Easy and fun to learn!
Ozain Herbalism and African Herbalism
I had been learning for years about the many teachers of herbalism, most known European influence herbalism, and local herbalism in the past. But nevertheless, I had been always very curious and ignorant about many of the traditional history, knowledge, and medicine that were brought to America by Africans. Sobandee Greer was the most delightful, powerful and overall impressive teacher for me on this weekend. She was one of the keynote speakers giving us such a moving and deep story of who she is, why the knowledge that she inherited from her grandmother is important in modern herbalism, and holistic ancient arts of wellness through Ozain herbalism was superb!! I am waiting for more of her teaching in the future.
Crosslin Fields Smith Medicine Elder of Keetoowah
This was a very special moment for my family to meet Medicine Elder Crosslin Fields. He is 89 years old, story teller, elder of the Cherokee tradition. The knowledge that he brought to the event, plus all the blessings he was able to offer us was so important. The Native America knowledge places plants and conservation as a sacred part of their religious beliefs. Their vast knowledge on plants, practices, and cares for the earth is something very valuable to pass to new generations. My family was blessed to meet the Fields Smith family.
Networking event by zones of Florida
The importance of conferences is mainly in the relationships you can develop with others that you meet. We had a time for people of different zones of Florida to gather and introduce each other, to tell our personal projects, and to become known with other plant lovers.
Beautiful Chorus
Music can be an spiritual experience. This is what happens when well thought harmonies come together in an effort to bring peace to others. I was blown away by their energies and their sound: Beautiful Chorus
Affinity Tent
This was a huge highlight for me. After many years of living in the US, my identity and the way I am perceive influences a lot of my interactions. Many times, persons of color feel out of place in predominantly Caucasian spaces, because our experiences tend to be very different from what many times may be assume by the majority and ignore. When we talk about holistic practices, plant medicines, personal beliefs, our identity and our experiences, social and economic status are indeed many times a deterrent to have access to many events, and feel comfortable enough to voice out concerns, experiences and knowledge. Affinity tent was a tent where BIPOC (Biracial or Persons of Color) were able to have a time to heal, have conversations, voice concerns and encourage each other!! We had such amazing dialogues there and I think it was my first time ever in going to an event, where such a space was offered to us! Thank you!
There were many other classes, experiences and persons that we met. Thank you to all. Thanks so much to the organizers for making such a well thought event, full of meaning and knowledge. My family and I felt comfortable and welcome, we made new friends and we were able to bring to our community lots of new plant, spiritual and sacred ideas. CONFERENCIA DE HIERBAS MEDICINALES DE LA FLORIDA 2019
Este año mi familia tuvo la maravillosa experiencia de visitor por primera vez la Conferencia de Conocimiento de Plantas. Por años, estuvimos escuchando todas las cosas lindas que otros nos contaban y que habian asistido antes. Este año, gracias a la generosidad de su beca, tuvimos la oportunidad de ir.
Lo primero que notamos, fue la belleza de el lugar, Campo La Llanada situado en el centro de la Florida, cerca a Lake Wales. Ellos ofrecieron cabañas y espacio para tiendas de acampar a todos los amantes de las plantas. En realidad, yo soy una de esas amantes de las plantas, y tenemos nuestra huerta úrbana en la que cultivamos plantas nativas de el Sur de la Florida, y también plantas comestibles para nuestra familia. Pero sobre todo, disfrutamos todos los beneficios mentales que vienen al cuidar de las plantas, la belleza que traen a nuestras vidas y la historia que hacemos como familia al cuidar de nuestro jardín juntos.
Asi que tener la oportunidad de aprender de maestros con mucho conocimiento de todo el mundo, es algo de lo que estamos muy agradecidos.
Muchos momentos fueron fantásticos en nuestro fin de semana allí, y las experiencias pueden ser muy diferentes para cada uno, pero aquí esta una lista de cosas y momentos, solo para darles una pequeña vista de lo que fue para nuestra familia:
Plaza Central
Había una plaza en donde estaba el escenario central, donde empezabamos cada día con un momento como comunidad, anuncios y más. Cada día, daban una bendición y música!! Todo fue tan positive! También, en el mismo espacio estaban diferentes vendedores y negocios que ofrecían sus medicinas de plantas, conocimiento, productos, libros, plantas y mas! Podimos comprar plantas medicinales de nuestros amigos Three Amigos Growers, formulas de hierbas de Beautyberry Apothecary y comprar libros hermosos para nuestra biblioteca familiar.
Clase de Hierbas para niños y jóvenes
Siempre agradezco los espacios que saludan a los niños y a la juventud, y ofrecen clases para ellos. Mis hijos fueron bien cuidados en el area de chicos con personas que tenían conocimiento de plantas, jugaron, aprendieron de las plantas y exploraron las areas naturales en donde era la conferencia. También nuestros amigos de Materia Musica compartieron con ellos canciones sobre plantas medicinales y sus beneficios. Fácil para aprender y divertido!
Practica Ozain de Herbalismo Africano
He estado aprendiendo por años de muchos maestros de plantas, y muchos conocen de la influencia Europea a el conocimiento de plantas y herbalismo local en el pasado. Sin embargo, siempre había estado muy curiosa e ignorante sobre la historia tradicional y conocimiento que fué traido a las Américas por Africanos. Sobandee Greer fue totalmente maravillosa, poderosa y totalmente impresionante como instructora y lider para mi ese fin de semana. Ella fué una de las presentadoras principales dándonos su historia y su conocimiento heredado de su abuela y es muy importante para el herbalismo moderno, las ciencias de el cuidado holístico, de las artes históricas y salud en general por medio de el Herbalismo Ozain, fué maravilloso! Estoy esperando recibir mas de su enseñanza en un futuro.
Maestro de la tradición Keetoowah Crosslin Fields Smith
Un momento muy especial para mi familia fue conocer al maestro Elder Crosslin Fields. El tiene 89 años, contador de historias de la tradición Cherokee. El conocimiento que trajo al evento, mas todas las bendiciones que nos ofreció fue muy importante. El conocimiento the los Nativos Americanos tienen es parte de sus creencias religiosas y el conocimiento sobre las plantas y la conservación es conocimiento que debe ser pasado a las nuevas generaciones. Mi familia fué muy bendecida de conocer la familia Fields Smith.
Conexiones por zonas de la Florida
La importancia de la conferencias es principalmente en las relaciones que pueden empezar con otros que conoces. Tuvimos un tiempo en el que diferentes grupos nos dividimos por zonas de la Florida para conocernos, saber de nuestros projectos y conocer otros amantes de las plantas.

Tienda de Afinidad
Esto fue algo muy especial para mi. Después de muchos años de vivir en los Estados Unidos, mi identidad y la manera en la que soy percibida influye grandemente en mis interacciones con otras personas. Muchas veces, las personas de color se sienten fuera de lugar en espacios predominantemente Caucásicos, por que nuestras experiencias tienden a ser muy diferentes y tienden a ser ignoradas. Cuando hablamos de practicas holísticas, medicinas tradicionales, conocimientos personales, nuestra identidad y nuestras experiencias, nuestro nivel socio económico tienden a ser un obstáculo para acceder a muchos eventos, sentirnos comfortables para decir cosas, contar experiencias y compartir conocimiento. La Tienda de la Afinidad fue un lugar donde BIPOC (Personal biraciales, y personas de color: No Caucásicos) fuimos empoderados para curarnos, tener conversaciones, expresar problemas y animarnos los unos a otros! Tuvimos conversaciones magnificas y fue la primera vez en la que he podido ir a un evento en el cual este espacio es ofrecido. Muchas gracias!
Hubieron muchas clases mas, experiencias y muchas personas las que conocimos. Gracias a todos. Muchas gracias a los organizadores por este evento tan bien pensado, lleno de significado y conocimiento. Mi familia y yo nos sentimos cómodos y bienvenidos, hicimos nuevos amigos y fuímos capaces de traer Nuevo conocimiento, plantas, ideas espírituales y sagradas a nuestras vidas y comunidad.
